Actually, I figured out a workaround to my own problem: take a junk file, put it in the directory where the ghost-file is reported to be. Give it the same name as each of the ghost files. Then delete it. Problem solved.
I'd still be interested to know if there's a less labor intensive way to fix this problem, and also what causes it in the first place.
